According to authentic, old legend on verso it is a portrait of certain "Landrichter Sartorius". Landrichter was a German word for a judge of a district.

Due to old cuts from news-papers which were published in early 19th century in Bavarian town Würzburg (see image nr.) and through the following web search we found this gentleman.
His name was Franz Stephan Sartorius. He was born in Würzburg in the 1760/70s, Lower Franconia (region of modern Bavaria; then Electorate Pfalz-Bayern). From 1791 to 1804 he was "Amtskeller" (head of administration) of village Mainberg (ca. 50 km from Würzburg), since 1805 Landrichter in Bischofsheim (ca. 95 km from Würzburg).
He died as a pensioner in Würzburg, on 1st of February 1827.

Although unsigned this pastel is a very typical and absolutely authentic work of leading Bavarian pastellist of the turn of 19th century, Johann Lorenz Kreul (for comparison CLICK HERE).

Johann Lorenz Kreul (1765 Erlbach - 1840 Nuremberg) began his studies under G. Ph. Zwinger at the Art School of Nuremberg. Apart from that, he took lessons from Ansbach court artist Friedrich Cotthard Naumann (see his work in our possession). He made numerous study trips through Germany, before settling for two years in Stuttgart on invitation of Duke of Wuerttemberg, and becoming the latter's royal portraitist. In 1807, he moved to Nuremberg. His son, Johann Friedrich Karl Kreul (1804-1867) was also a well-known portraitist. This explains why our artist is often referred to as Johann Lorenz Kreul the Elder.
