Signed "Vernet" it is a very rare on current antique market work of Prussian miniaturist Carl Friedrich Vernet who between 1795-1805 was active in St.Petersburg (our images nr.12-20 show several other works of his).

The young lady, sitter of this superior quality miniature is dressed and hairstyled according to the fashion of 1799/1800. i.e "Russian" period of the artist. Our comparison images nr.7-9 demonstrate great physiognomical resemblance of this lady with then 25-year-old, newlywed Natalia Zakharovna Kolycheva, nee Khitrovo, "freilina" (lady-in-waiting) of Tsar Paul I's consort, Empress Maria Fedorovna.
She was a daughter of "deistvitelny statski sovetnik" (actual state councillor) Zakhar Alexeevich Khitrovo (1734-1708; see our image nr.11) and his wife Anastasia Nikolaevna Maslova. She was born on 13th June 1774 in St.Petersburg. On 6th February 1799 she married in that city the Russian diplomat, then envoy in Batavian (Holland) Republic (shortly after the wedding he became envoy in Vienna, later - in Paris) - Stepan Alexeevich Kolychev (1746-1805; CLICK HERE and see our image nr.10) who was 28 years her senior.
In 1801 her husband became Russian vice-chancellor.
Natalia Zakharovna died childlos on 25th October 1803 and was buried at Alexandro-Nevskaya Lavra in St.Petersburg.

Due to his family name the author of this miniature was a French-born. It is known that he was a pupil of Anna-Dorothea Terbusch in Berlin where he stayed unril 1783. After 1790 he settled in Koenigsberg, Eastern Prussia (now Kaliningrad, Russia). Between 1795-1805 (due to his several dated portraits of Russian generals and courtiers) he was active in St.Petersburg. Later he lived again in Koenigsberg where he was still mentioned in 1820s.
Until recently C. Vernet (one finds this signature on some of his works) was often mistaken for famous French battle and horse artist Antoine-Charles-Horace (called Carle) Vernet (1758-1836).
Works of his are to see in Louvre, National Gallery Berlin, Museum "Pavlovsk" by St.Petersburg etc.

P.S. 3rd of March 2020:
Browsing through art literature we discovered additional (see our three last additional images) information about this artist. His full name was Carl Friedrich Vernet. He was born in 1769 and died in 1825 in Reval (then center of Russian Liflandskaya Gubernia, now Tallinn, Estonia). Shortly before his death he worked in (then Russian) Derpt (Dorpat, now Tartu, Estonia).
