Although unsigned, this of outstanding quality, large miniature on ivory is an absolutely authentic work of well-known Franco-English miniaturist of early 19th century, Jean François Huët-Villiers. Our comparison images nr. 8-19 fully confirm his authorship.
Jean François Huët (also Huët-Villiers) was born in 1772 in Paris as a son of painter Jean-Baptiste Huët. He studied with his father, in 1792, enlisted into the army and, after leaving the military service, devoted himself to painting watercolors and miniatures on ivory. As we will see from examples of his miniatures (Collection Tansey), by 1796 Huët-Villiers had already estblished himself as an outstanding miniaturist. He began signing his works with the name Huët-Villiers (or Villiers Huët) having taken the name "Villiers" from Villiers-sur-Orge, where his father owned land. From 1799 onwards, a regular exponent at the Salon de Paris, he also managed to come to England in the early 1800s and to begin exhibiting also at the London Royal Academy, the British Institute, etc. (1803-1813). He became a member of the Associated Artists in Watercolor on July 29, 1807. He was also an appointed court miniature painter of the Duke and Duchess of York in 1805, as well as a court painter of the King of France (exiled Louis XVIII). He painted his miniatures not only on ivory but also on alabaster and marble, executed chalk portraits, made landscape drawings and painting with mythological and fancy subjects, some of which were engraved. He died in London on July 28, 1813 and was buried at St. Pancras Old Churchyard. Other examples of his miniatures are housed in Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Musée Lambinet (Versailles), etc.
