This scene with Russian cossacks escorting ox-drawn wagons with imprisoned Turkish soldiers took place in winter 1877/78, during the Russo-Turkish ("Balkan") War (CLICK HERE).
The relatively large (74,5 x 100 cm) oil on canvas painting strongly resembles in its subject and composition works of well-known the Russian battle artist who, after having spent several months at the headquarters of the Russian Field Army executed (after his return to Russia) numerous paintings showing significant events (and everyday life scenes) of this war (see our comparison images nr. 10-19 and CLICK HERE).
The name of this artist was Pavel Osipovich Kovalevsky. Author of our painting was either one of latter's pupils or one strongly influenced by him.

Pavel Osipovich Kovalevsky (1843 Kazan - 1903 St. Petersburg) was a son of Osip Kovalevsky, Professor of Kazan University. In 1862 he entered the Imperial Academy of Fine Art in St. Petersburg where his teacher was battle painter Bogdan Villewalde. During these studies he was awarded four silver academic awards and in 1869 a Small Golden Medal (the latter for painting "Cossacks pursuing Turkish foragers by Kars"). In 1871, for painting "First day of the Battle of Leipzig, in 1813" he obtained a Great Golden Medal.
In 1873, with a government scholarship Kovalevsky went abroad for three years - Germany, Austria, Italy; and stayed in Rome for a long time. In 1876, for his painting "Excavations in Rome" he obtained the title of an academician. Besides that he participated with great success (several golden medals) at different exhibitions during this period.
As said above, during the Balkan War of 1877/78 he accompanied the Russian Field Army.
In 1881 he obtained the title of professor.
Since 1897 Kovalevsky was a head of the academic class of battle painting at the St. Petersburg Academy.
Works of his are to see in the greatest Russian and foreign museums.
