Russian Composer Anton Rubinstein, Autograph, 1894
2500 EUR - 25% DISCOUNT = 1875,00 EUR
Important autograph of the world famous Russian composer, pianist and conductor Anton Grigorevich Rubinstein (1829-1894). As a pianist he was regarded a rival to Franz Liszt and has been described by historians as one of the greatest virtuosos in history.
Anton Rubinstein was born in Vikhvatinets (at the time part of Russia, now Republic of Moldova). He learned the piano from the early age, and made his first public appearance at the age of nine. He was taken to Paris, and then to Berlin, where he studied composition. He then moved to Vienna, where he briefly taught, before returning to Russia in 1848 where he worked as musician to the sister-in-law of the Tsar. Rubinstein began to tour again in the late 1850s before settling in St. Petersburg, where in 1862 he founded the St.Petersburger Conservatory, the first music school in Russia. He took a teaching post there, instructing Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, amongst others. He also continued to make tours as pianist and spent a short stint teaching in Dresden (sic!) toward the end of his life. He died in Peterhof, St.Petersburg, having suffered from heart disease for some time.
This sheet with a note citation is one of Rubinstein's last autographs (dated with May 1894, a few months before his death).
