Samuel Shelley (ca.1750/56 Whitechapel, London - 1808 London) was said to have been largely self-taught. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1774 aged "17 last March", thus making his date of birth 1756, six years later than had hitherto been supposed. He was awarded a premium by the Society of Arts, 1770. He exhibited at the Society of Artists in 1773 and 1775, at the Royal Academy between 1774 and 1804 and also at British Institution and Old Water Colour Society (at which he was a member). Shelley painted miniatures, watercolours, figure subjects, oil paintings, drew illustrations and engraved some of his own works; others were engraved by Bartolozzi, J.R.Smith, etc. Daphne Foskett says further: "... he was a prolific artist, not all of his works being of equal merit...". Works of Samuel Shelley can be viewed at the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, as well as many other important British and foreign public collections.
