It is a high quality portrait of a French colonel. He bears three awards: Chevalier (sic!) Cross of the Order of Legion of Honor (4th model), Knight Cross of Bavarian Military Order of Maximilian Joseph and Cross of French Royal Order of St.Louis. The fact, that St-Louis Order is placed as a last (!) in this group of three, tell us that the portrait was made during "100 Days" of 1815 - the sitter was awarded with St.Louis in 1814, during the 1st Restoration, and after Napoleon's comeback in April 1815 he rehanged this cross to the last position.
In 2010 certain Dimitri Gorchkoff from Moscow, being shortly in Vienna proffered assistance in identification of sitters of military portraits in our collection. He presented himself as a leading expert in Napoleonica, "doctor of history" etc. In next several years he supplied (being rewarded for his services) over one hundred "attributions". Unfortunately almost all "discoveries" of this self-styled "expert" turned out to be the latter's fantasies (psychosis?)).
In 2011, just after we acquired presented here miniature he informed us that the name of this colonel is Victor Abel Desalle (or de Salle). The latter was born in 1776 and died in 1864. Our image nr.8 provides extensive biography of this officer.
Nevertheless, in January 2020, to our great surprise, reading again Desalle's biography we discovered an interesting detail: in 1815 this man was already (since two years!) in possession of an Officer Cross (ribbon with rosette) of Legion of Honor.
One more fantasy of "Dr." Gorchkoff!
