Found in an English provincial shop it is an extremely rare on current antique market (unlike numerous portrait drawings) miniature on ivory by well-known, 18th century, Russian portraitist, Carl Hampeln.

The sitter of this miniature portrait, a relatively young (she looks to be about 30 years) lady is dressed and hairstyled according to the fashion of the late 1810s, which means she was a resident of St.Petersburg, where the artist stayed (after his comeback to Russia - see his biography below) between 1817-1826.

Exactly 30-year-old was in 1817 "freilina" (lady-in-waiting) at St.Petersburg Court and since 1801 married woman, Princess Natalia Yurievna Saltykova, nee Countess Golovkina (1797-1860). Her portrait, executed in the early 1810s by Alexander Molinari (see our image nr.7) shows a young woman whose physiognomical characteristics fully correspond with that of our sitter.

Our image nr.8 provides biography of Princess Saltykova (since 1845 - Serene Princess Sasltykova-Golovkina).

Carl Hampeln (in Russian: Karl Karlovich Gampeln) was born in 1794 in a German family living in Moscow. Born deaf-mute (he signed mainly with French addition "sourde-muette" or "sourd-muet"), he studied in Vienna Institute for deaf-mutes, then - at the Vienna Academy of Fine Art. In 1817-1826, he lived in St. Petersburg, where he taught at the School for deaf-mutes; in 1827, he settled in Moscow and remained there until his death, which occurred sometime after 1880.
One of the first Russian lithographers, he was also a fine portrait miniaturist and portrait graphic artist (working with chalks or watercolors), enjoying a broad clientele. He counted among his sitters Russian royalties and many important members of the Russian high society.
Besides extensive biographic information about the artist, our additional images show several other portrait drawings and miniatures of this famous artist.

Our images nr.9-21 show several other works of this artist.
