Author of this, superior quality, large miniaure, Viennese portraitist Carl Josef Alois Agricola was married twice. Nine years after the death of his first wife, Marie Christine von Saar (1785-1805; aunt of future Vienna miniaturist Carl von Saar) he married in 1814 his second wife, 16-year-old Julie (birth name unknown). Our image nr.7 shows the latter shortly before their wedding. In next 1815 he again portrayed her - we see this young woman at the crib of her 4-month-old son Carl (see image nr.8). Our next image - nr.9 - shows her already adult daughters (mid-1830s) - great physiognomical resemblance!
Mme Julie Agricola was still alive in 1837 - in that year Agricola showed her portrait at the annual exhibition of Vienna Academy of Fine Art (see image nr.10).
On the portrait presented here Julie is in her early twenties - her dress and hairstyle speak for 1820/22.
In the early 20th century this miniature (acquired by the collector as "portrait of Agricola's 2nd wife") was in possession of Viennese art collector Josef Flesch. After latter's death it was sold through Viennese auction house "Wawra" (sale on 9th May 1930, Lot 1 (see our image nr.11)) to Viennese collector Pollack.
On 4th May 1977 it resurfaced at the sale of auction house "Sotheby Parke Bernet" in Monaco (Lot 57; see our image nr.12) and came to "Foundation Napoleon", Paris.
Finally, on 9th December 2019 it came (as a part of the collection of "Foundation Napoleon") "under the hammer" at the sale of Parisian auction house "Artcurial" (Lot 257).
Carl Josef Alois Agricola (1779 Saeckingen/Baden - 1852 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian historical, portrait and miniaturist painter. He was born in Germany, began studying in Karlsruhe, moved to Vienna in 1798 and studied at the Viennese Academy under the famous Fueger. Agricola became a very popular portrait miniature artist and also made many historical and allegorical paintings. Especially known are his paintings with little children, a few of them can be seen at the Austrian National Gallery "Belvedere".
