Antoine Vestier (1740 Avallon - 1824 Paris) went to Paris in 1760, where he became a pupil of the enameller A. Reverand. He also studied at the Royal Academy under the portraitist J.B. Pierre. After staying in Holland for a time and in London in 1776, he exhibited at the Salon de la Correspondance in 1782. In 1785, the artist became an associate of the Academy and made his debut in the same year at the Salon of the Louvre, where he continued to exhibit until the year 1806. In 1786, he became a member of the Academy and - two years later - a painter to the King. According to Schidlof, "Vestier is rightly considered as one of the best French miniaturists of the 18th century".
