Painted about 1785, it is a miniature portrait of a young lady depicted sitting in landscape, her favorite dog is besides her on a small elevated plateau. She just finished reading a letter from her husband, as the open envelope atop her lap reads: "A Marquise /Madame de Pezé /Courtavel /a Chartres" (see image nr.6). Her reply (the sealed envelope laid in front of the dog) is similarly informing the viewer of her husband's identity: "A Monsieur /Ma (rquise) C(ourtavel?).de /Pezé /a Chartres" (see image nr.7).
Brief search on Web brought (see our images nr.21-22) following information:
The full name of the depicted young lady was Marie Louise marquise de Courtavel de Peze. She was born on 9th November 1766 as daughter of Royal officer Henri-Joseph Marquis de Lambert (1738-1808; later marechal-de-camp, inspector general of cavalry, member of the War Council, commandant of fortress Arras; emigrated during the French Revolution, served in Russian Army, died in Poland) and Marie Anisson du Perron. Her younger brother, Marie Charles, marquis de Lambert emmigrated together with father to Russia where (as Karl Osipovich de Lambert) made a brilliant military career - see our web # 41869 ).
On 14th July 1783, at Chateau de Ris in commune Besson she married 7 years her senior, colonel of dragoons Louis Francois Rene, marquis de Courtavel-Peze (1759-1841) from old aristocratic family in Chartres, department Eure-et-Loir, Northern France. Three years later her husband became Commander of Infantry Regiment "de Vivarais", In 1791 the couple left France. The husband entered in Germany Royalist Army of Princes, later he served in Portugal (Louis XVIII made him then to marechal-de-camp (brigade general)). Back to France in 1814 he was promoted to lieutenanr general. His marriage with Marie Louise was childlos. Marie Louise died in 1837, in age of 70. On presented here miniature portrait she is 18/20-year-old.
This high quality miniature seems to be (a very typical - for comparisons, see images nr.11-18) work of well-known French portrait miniaturist Jean Antoine Laurent (for extensive biography of this artist, see our images nr.19-20).
