Obviously one from a cycle of etnographic sketches, this, titled in French "Costumes finois" ("Finnish costumes") watercolor is a typical (see our comparison images nr. 7-11) and absolutely authentic work of Russian, 1st half of the 19th century artist Karl Ivanovich Kollmann.

Typical work of Karl Kollmann, who lived in Russia since his youth (he was called Karl Ivanovich Kollmann there).

Karl Kollmann was born in 1788 in Augsburg; as a boy, studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and, at the age of 17, moved to St. Petersburg to his uncle - famous Russian court engraver of German origin, Ignaz Sebastian Klauber. The latter also supervised the engraving department of St. Petersburg Imperial Academy. Young Karl Kollmann had, nonetheless, not felt the vocation for engravery, and instead began studying watercolor painting, specializing in scenes from Russian folk life. At the same time, he taught drawing. Later on he worked as a teacher at the Imperial Corps of Pages and Forestry School. In 1836, St. Petersburg Academy promoted him to academician.

Our additional images offer Kollmann's biography from several Russian sources and show two of his small watercolors offered at art auctions in the last years.
