Formerly in the famous collection of the Duke Ernst Ludwig of Hessen, published in the collection's catalogue (see our image nr.8) this portrait - executed in 1804 by the miniaturist August Lutz - shows Ludwig X, Landgrave of Hessen-Darmstadt (1753-1830), who two years later became (under name Ludwig I) first Grand Duke of Hessen und by Rhein (see our image nr. 9 with his biography in Wikipedia).

During two hundred years this miniature "wandered" through different private collections resurfacing in September 2019 in a South German antique store where it was immediately acquired by us.

According to Schidlof, August Lutz worked in Heilbronn (Germany) about 1800. Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard widens the time frame of his activity to the period between 1792 and 1815 (basing her presumption on his known dated works).
Similarly, Lemoine-Bouchard discovered that August Lutz attended Parisian Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1806 and was probably a pupil of Isabey at a later date.
