Johann Ludwig Strecker was born on the 7th of May 1721 in Darmstadt as son of Thomas Michael Strecker (1680-1731), Kammerherr (chamberlain) of the Hereditary Prince Ludwig IX of Hessen-Darmstadt (future Landgrave and father of Natalia Alexeevna) in the latter's residence town Buchsweiler. Until 1740 Strecker was a pupil of Darmstadt court artist Johann Christian Fiedler. Later he received a scholarship and spent the period between 1741 and 1750 in Paris. On the 9th of March 1759 he was appointed a court artist of the Hereditary Prince Ludwig IX and his wife Karoline and spent the next years working in latters' residences in Primasens and Buchsweiler. In 1765, a few days after the death of his teacher J. Ch. Fiedler, he succeeded the latter as the 1st court artist in Darmstadt. Strecker remained in this position until his death in Darmstadt on the 12th of September 1799. He executed numerous portraits of Ludwig IX in oil and miniature. Works of his can be seen in various German museums (i.e. Darmstadt, Frankfurt a.M., Göttingen, Bad Homburg, Jena, Marburg) as well as abroad (Gatchina near St. Petersburg).
