Authentic old legend on verso (see image nr.10) names the author of this robber scene and its title, under which this superior quality watercolor was shown at the 1808 exhibition of the London Royal Academy - "Landscape with Banditti". Exactly with this title it is mentioned in various reference sources which we found online (see image nr.11).
We are dealing here with a rare, finished (sic!) watercolor executed in 1807/08 by well-known British artist Richard Cooper the Younger.
Richard Cooper II was born in Edinburgh on February 6th, 1740 as son of artist Richard Cooper-senior (1701-1764) and his wife Anne Lind. He is considered one of Britain's Grand Masters in watercolor and drawing.
Cooper succeeded Alexander Cozens and taught members of the Royal Family. Queen Charlotte was interested in the arts and music and Cooper became her art teacher.
Cooper was taught by his father before moving to Paris to train under the engraver J. P. Le Bas. Afterwards, around 1770, he went to Italy but by 1778 he was back in Britain.
Original works of his are rare. The Tate Gallery has five original works and five prints. The Government Art Collection has five prints; the National Portrait Gallery has one original work and nine prints; the British Museum however has over ninety objects attributed to him (10 drawings and 74 prints).
He exhibited regularly between 1778-1809 at London Royal Academy, showing chiefly Roman and Neapolitan landscape watercolors.
He died in December 1822 in Eltham, a suburb of London.
