It is a miniature portrait of an Austrian chasseur (according to his uniform) officer from the period of anti-Napoleonic campaigns of 1813/15. He bears a Chevalier Cross of Russian Military St.Georg Order of 4th class.

Among Austrian chasseurs of that period only one man was in possession of this award - 42-year-old Commander of the established in December of 1813 "Fenner-Jäger-Corps" (Tyrolean chasseur corps with General Franz von Fenner as a chief (proprietor)), Lieutenant Colonel Carl von Call (1771-1848; see our images nr.8-10 with his another portrait and extensive biography). The latter obtained this award from Russian Tsar on 20th October 1813, two days after the famous Battle of Leipzig. Simultaneously he oibtained also from Kaiser Franz II the Knight Cross of Austrian Military Maria-Theresian Order and from Prussian King - Prussian Military Distinction Order "Pour le merite".
In 1816 Austrian Kaiser ennobled him to Freiherr (Baron) with addition "von Kulmbach". In thge same year he retreated from service, In 1835 he was promoted to colonel of reserve,. He died in Vienna on 9th December 1848 (see image nr.11with obituary).

This miniature is arguably the earliest known work of one of the best Viennese portrait miniaturists of the 1st half of 19th century, Carl von Saar.

Carl von Saar (1797 Vienna- 1853 ibid.) was a very well-known Austrian portrait miniaturist. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Janscha and Maurer and exhibited in the academical exhibitions from 1822. First strongly influenced by miniatures of Daffinger, he later more followed the direction of Kriehuber, especially in his watercolor portraits. He belonged to the most favorite portraitists of the Austrian aristocracy.
