Miniature on ivory with portrait of a lady in Austrian folk costume ("dirndl") with attributes of a widow.
Her name is provided in the old authentic German inscription on verso: "Portrait der Gräfin /Vilma Thurn Valsassina /...Comtesse Spannocchi /Bekommen von ihr selbst /zu Weihnachten 1911 /in Graz /Bertha Thoma". The author of this inscription - Bertha Maria Theresia Thoma (1880-1947) - was a Viennese lfemale artist, who in 1915-1933 copied works of Viennese 19th-century leading miniaturists (for example see our web #36355).
The depicted lady was born in 1836 as Wilhelmine (Vilma) von Eichner (on this portrait she is 31-year-old and since two years widow.. Her first husband was Peter Leopold Graf Spannocchi (1835-1875). Four years after the latter's death (and two years after this miniature was made) she married her second (19 years her junior!) husband, Adolf Graf Thurn-Valsassina de Spessa et Villalta (1855-1901) whom she (as we see from date 1911 in the legend on verso) also outlived (see our image nr.12).

This 1st-class quality miniature, signed with author's monogram "R.S." is a very typical later work of well-known Viennese miniaturist Robert Schwager.

Richard Schwager (1822 Duppau, Bohemia - 1880 Rodaun by Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian portrait miniature painter. From 1847 he was a pupil of Johann Nepomuk Ender and Leopold Kupelwieser at the Vienna Academy and made various trips to Germany, France, Belgium, England and Russia, where he received comissions of high esteem. He was one of the last miniaturists from the circle of Moritz Michael Daffinger and received the nickname "Miniature-Amerling" (Friedrich von Amerling was the best Viennese portraitist of the 19th century) for his virtuoso art of painting. From 1861 he was a member of the Vienna "Kuenstlerhaus".

Our images nr.8-11 show several other later works of this artist that were offered at art auctions in the last years.
