This niniature from late 1810s shows senior (due to corresponding sabre belt; ranks between major and colonel) officer of Tyrolean "Jäger-Regiment" (chasseurs) with a knight cross of established in 1808 Austrian Order of Leopold.. Among all senior officers of this regiment only one was in period between 1808-1820 in possession of this order. In late 1817 he was transferred to this regiment (in rank of a lieutenant colonel) from General Staff where he served from late 1800s. He is depicted here only with Leopold's cross although he was already also in possession of Russian Order of St.Vladimir of 4th class (awarded surely during anti-Napoleonic campaigns of 1813/15). Unfortunately no biographical information concerning him was to find on Web...
The author of this miniature Johann Georg Schedler (also Schädler) was born in 1777 in Constance (Kingdom Wuerttemberg; now German province Baden-Wuerttemberg) and died in 1866 in Innsbruck, Austria. Son of a merchant he began his art studies under Swiss engraver Bleuler in Schaffhausen, then studied in Zurich under landscapist J. H. Hueber. In 1796-1802 he studied at the Augsburg Art School. In 1804 he settled in Innsbruck, where he then became active as portrait miniaturist and (concurrently) topographic landscapist. In 1821 he opened a private drawing school in Innsbruck.
Two of his drawing showing Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer can be seen in Innsbruck Museum "Fernandeum". Similarly Vienna Army Museum (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) houses his watercolor on silk portrait of Andreas Hofer (see image nr.16).
