Painted in early 1814, in Inssbruck, just after his awarding Knight Cross of Austrian Imperial Leopold Order (cross on his left chest; see also our image nr.13), it is a miniature portrait (the earliest one!) of 26-years-old Oberleutnant (1st Lieutenant) of "Fenner-Jägerkorps" (Tyrolean chasseurs), Georg Graf (Count) von Thurn-Valsassina (1788-1866; future Austrian warlord). One year later, on 30th April 1815 he will obtain his next award - the Knight Cross of Austrian Military Maria-Theresian Order (still absent on this portrait). For his another portrait and his extensive biography see our images nr.8-12.

The author of this miniature Johann Georg Schedler (also Schädler) was born in 1777 in Constance (Kingdom Wuerttemberg; now German province Baden-Wuerttemberg) and died in 1866 in Innsbruck, Austria. Son of a merchant he began his art studies under Swiss engraver Bleuler in Schaffhausen, then studied in Zurich under landscapist J. H. Hueber. In 1796-1802 he studied at the Augsburg Art School. In 1804 he settled in Innsbruck, where he then became active as portrait miniaturist and (concurrently) topographic landscapist. In 1821 he opened a private drawing school in Innsbruck.
Two of his drawing showing Tyrolean patriot Andreas Hofer can be seen in Innsbruck Museum "Fernandeum". Similarly Vienna Army Museum (Heeresgeschichtliches Museum) houses his watercolor on silk portrait of Andreas Hofer (see image nr.16).
