We were able to locate the so far only accredited portrait miniature on ivory by famous Venetian 18th-century historical artist and portraitist Francesco Fedeli, who was more commonly known by his nickname "Maggiotto", i.e. Francesco Maggiotto.
The sitter's slight head tilt and a somewhat "puzzled" look resemble painting tactic used by this artist in his well-known self-portrait (see our image nr.18).
This miniature shows a gentleman in uniform of a Napoleonic prefect of department (district; for comparison, see our image nr.22). He was surely a head of one of created in 1804, on the territory of Northern Italy departments. He bears a Chevalier Cross (1st model), as one of the first awardees (of the same 1804) of the Napoleonic Order of Legion of Honor. In the liist of awardees Chevalier Cross (nomination of 14th June 1804) one finds a lot of prefects (see our image nr.23). Among the latter we find only three prefects of just established "Italian" departments - Baron Angelo Gandolfo (department Ombrone with Siena as centre; ca. 250 km from Venice; in 1804 he was 49-year-old), Baron Marie Just Antoine de La Rivoire de La Tourette (department Genes with Genoa as centre; ca. 300 km from Venice; in 1804 this man was 55-year-old) and Baron Carlo Stefano Giulio (department Sesia (Piedmont) with Vercelli as centre; ca. 300 km from Venice; in 1804 - 47-year-old). Due to sitter's relatively young appearance the first in question would be the youngest of them - Carlo Stefano Giulio (professor of medicine and politician; 1757-1815; see our image nr.24 with his biography). The latter was appointed prefect of Sesia on 14th March 1804 and took possession of this post on the following 12 June 1804, i.e. two days before his awarding Order of Legion (these both events were surely a reason immediately to commission a portrait showing him in the new uniform and with just received order's cross). And really: comparison with portrait of latter's son, well-known Turin mathematician Carlo Ignazio Giulio (see our image nr.25) convincingly supportrs our supposition.
Francesco Fedeli (alike his father called "Maggiotto") was born in 1738 in Venice and died in the same city on the 13th of September 1805. He was a son of a very well known Venetian artist Domenico Fedeli dit Maggiotto (1713-1794) and Elena Zuliani. He continued his father's innovations, while also being an eclectic follower of such major 18th-century Venetian painters as Giambattista Pittoni, Giambattista Tiepolo, Pietro Longhi and Francesco Zuccarelli. He studied with Michelangelo Morlaiter (1729-1806) and Pietro Novelli. His paintings include historical subjects, allegories, genre scenes and portraits. Within the circle of the Accademia in Venice, he was widely appreciated as a painter, and among his pupils were the most important Venetian artists of the early 19th century, including Laffanzio Querena, Carlo Bevilacqua, Natale Schiavoni and Francesco Hayez.
