The Polish (due to his dress) aristocrat depicted on this miniature is none other than the celebrated politician and general of the Polish Royal Army, founder of Polish Masonry, Andrzej Mokronowski (for comparison see our images nr. 9-11 with other portraits of his). He is depicted in the mid-1760s, i.e. many years before his being awarded the Polish Order of the White Eagle (1776). For his extensive biography see our image nr.11 and CLICK HERE).

We are absolutely convinced to deal here with an early work of leading Polish miniaturist of aforementioned period, Wincenty de Lesseur-Lesserowitz. Moreover, we are also sure it is a case, typical for this artist, of copying one of the works (large-scala portrait: its whereabouts are unknown) of his teacher, Warsaw court portraitist Marcello Bacciarelli (see our comparison images nr.12-16) in miniature technique.

Wincenty de Lesseur-Lesserowicz (1745 Warsaw - 1813 Warsaw) was a son of a French colonel. He studied under Italo-born Polish court artist Marcello Bacciarelli and the latter's wife, portrait miniaturist Friederike Bacciarelli. He spent some time in Vienna and, while there, became strongly influenced by Fueger (and clearly imitated the latter's "water-drop" technique in his works), although there is no evidence of his ever being Fueger's pupil. He was taught very highly of by the King Stanislas August of Poland, who ennobled him in 1781. Lesseur-Lesserowicz executed numerous orders for the King, as well as for the Mniszech family.
He was primarily a miniaturist, yet also painted portraits in oils and pastel.
Besides producing miniatures from life, he made numerous copies (mainly after Marcello Bacciarelli, Grassi, Fueger and Lampi-senior).
