Wenzel (Johann Wenzel) Kraus was born in 1791 in Kahn by Bruex and died in 1849 in Vienna (of cholera). At first he began studying mathematics, but later turned to painting and soon entered the Prague Academy. As a portrait artist, Kraus was now and then in Prague, Teplitz, Karlsbad, and Vienna. At the beginning of his artistic career Kraus was influenced by Fueger. Later he turned to the style of Moritz Michael Daffinger and Robert Theer. His contemporaries valued Kraus as much as the miniaturists Albert Suchy or Bernhard de Guerard. His works have always belonged to the best Austrian private collections.
