Supreme quality original work of well-known Russian portrait miniaturist Alois Gustav Rockstuhl.
Thought nine years long to be portrait of unknown, richly decorated with Russian awards gentleman it turned out to be that of celebrated Russian diplomat of 19th century, German-born (noble family from Courland), Baron (since 1871 Count) Ernst Philipp von Brunnow (in Russia: Philipp Ivanovich Brunnov).
This discovered sitter's identity is a result of profound research made recently by well-known Russian historian (especially specialist in phaleristica) Mr. Sergei Golovin. In his email from June 19, 2019 (see our image nr.11) he describes in detail all stages of his "detective" work.
Moreover, Mr. Golovin found on Web xylographic repruduction of our watercolor - see image.nr.12)!!.

Filipp Ivanovich Brunnov was born in Dresden, on 31 August 1797 and died on 12 Apöril 1875 in Darmstadt. His father was Saxonian Colonel Johann Ernst von Brunnow (1751-1822), mother - Elisabeth Philippine von Lieven (1762-1844).
From 1815 to 1818 he studied law in Leipzig, afterwards entered Russian state service. From the begin he belonged to close circle of Russian Foreign Minister Nesselrode.
In 1839 he became Russian envoy in Stuttgart and from 1840 to 1854 he was Russian ambassador in London. In 1856 he participated ar Peace Congress in Paris (see our image nr.16). In 1857 he was envoy in Berlin, and from 1858 to 1870 he was again in London. In 1870 he was shortly in Paris, but from February 1871 again in London.

Alois Gustav (in Russia - Aloisi Petrovich) Rockstuhl was born in 1798 in Goldingen by Vilnius (Lithuania) as son of the well known Miniaturist Peter Ernst Rochstuhl (1764-1824 St.Petersburg). He studied from 1832 at the St.Petersburger Imperial Academy of Fine Arts and in 1835 was raised by the Academy to the rank of 'non-class artist' "for recognized success in oil and miniature painting". In 1840 to "academician" , becoming then a professor of the Academy (see signature on our miniature!). 1842 he was called to the "Cabinet of Her Majesty" and received the rank of "Painter of Her Imperial Majesty". He was also appointed Director of the Museum of Tsarskoselski Arsenal in Mon Bijou. Rockstuhl's work consisted exclusively of painting miniatures for the royalties, Russian and foreign .

Our images nr.11-13 show a few other portrait works of this artist made in similar technique (which means not in his usual technique of watercolor on ivory or porcelain painting, but drawings on paper or cardboard). Images nr.19-25 show several of his works that were offered at international art auction market in the last years.

We are very grateful to Mr. Golovin for his generous help
