Mary Henrietta Stuart, Royal Princess of Orange-Nassau (1631-1660) was the eldest daughter of King Charles I of England. She was the wife of Willem II of Orange.-Nassau (1626-1650). Mary Stuart or Mary of Orange as she was also known, was the first daughter of a British sovereign to hold the title Royal Princess (designated by Charles I in 1642). Our images 5-7 show other portraits of her.
It is interesting to mention that there exists another miniature portrait (also on copper) of the same person, which is housed in museum in Nancy. This portrait bears on verso the title "Constance de Haduques" (see our image nr.13). After examining various reference sources, we could not locate any person with surname "de Haduques", hence we believe this inscription to be an erroneous one. We also believe that "Nancy" miniature is another one of numerous Mary Henrietta's portraits, and that it was also painted in the 17th century (as probably a copy after one of her larger portraits).
For other portraits of the same sitter, see these items in our possession.
As demonstrates our comparison image nr.8 we are dealing here with a contemporary copy after Flemish, 17th century artist Gonzales Coques, executed by one of latter's pupils.
Gonzales Coques (1614 Antwerp - 1684 ibidem) was a pupil of Pieter Brueghel II or III in 1626/7. He was probably also a pupil of D. Ryckaert, whose daughter he married in 1643. Coques became a master in the Antwerp Guild in 1640/1. An accomplished portrait painter, he was greatly influenced by Rubens and Van Dyck, although his figures were generally on a smaller scale, and he enjoyed the patronage of successive Governor Generals of the Netherlands. Among his sponsors were also foreign royalties and high aristocrats: for example, Charles I of England commissioned him with many portraits.
