With a very great possibility it is author's own replica of Henri Bellange's small drawing in collection of Chateau de Pau, France (see our image nr.6). It is a portrait of celebrated French warlord of 16th century, Marshal Armand de Gontaut, baron de Biron (1524-1592; see our image nr.7 with his biography).

Till recently the replica in Chateau de Pau was thought to be a work of certain Thierry Bellange, whose life dates (according to Benezit) were allegedly 1594-1638. In reality it was a big misunderstanding - as demonstrates clips from Saur's artist dictionary (see image nr.8) there was no Thierry Bellange. The real author of drawing in Pau was artist Henri Bellange.

Henri Bellange was born on 8th of June 1613 in Nancy (god parents: Henri II Duke of Lorrain and Christine de Salm, Duchess of Vaudémont) and died between 1672 and 1680 in Paris (he was mentioned there as collaborator of Simon Vouet). Between 1633 and 1645 he repeatedly stayed in Rome (one finds his name - "Errigo Bellange" - in lists of Accademia di S.Luca). Especially known are his small portrait drawings on vellum (some of them are to see in Louvre).

Provenance: French noble estate (initially set (together with eleven other miniatures) into wooden tableau - see image nr.9).
