Executed a few years before the sitter's death (1833), it is a rare portrait (only one other portrayal of this man had been known so far; it shows him at a much younger age - see our image nr.7) of celebrated British Naval officer (from 1815 - "Admiral of the White"), Sir Herbert Sawyer (1760s-1833; for his extensive biography, see our image nr.8).

The author of this minaiture was Italo-born London artist Lorenzo Thewenetti (he signed the verso of the miniature with his London address).

Lorenzo Thewenetti was born in ca. 1797 probably in Italy. He was one of three brothers; Edward and Michael were also miniaturists. From 1860 all three were photographers and portraitists; Edward and Lorenzo were described as "Gentlemen". Lorenzo was working in Cheltenham (1824), London (1826-1827) and in 1837 the three brothers lived at 7 Macaulay Buildings, Bath with a studio at 14 Bond Street, London. From 1841/49 they lived at 2 Henrietta Street, Bath and moved in 1850, to 29 Henrietta Street, where Lorenzo died in 1878. His obituary notice in the "Bath Chronicle" in April 1878, gives his age as 89. He was a Roman Catholic and a man of deep piety.
Some of his works were engraved. Examples of his work are in Victoria & Albert Museum and in National Portrait Gallery (both in London).
