According to authentic legend on verso of this miniature (handwritten in the 19th century by its owner and possibly one of the sitter's descendants), we are dealing here with portrait of one of the wealthiest residents of the German city Cologne (CLICK HERE) at the turn of the 19th century, Friedrich Karl Heimann (the inscription on verso refers to him in French - Frederic Charles Heimann). Heimann was the city's leading merchant and forwarder, as well as city councilor.
Friedrich Karl Heimann was born on May 17, 1757 in Eichenhof by Waldbröl (a town situated 45km from Cologne) into a Protestant family. As a young man, he moved to Cologne, where in 1779 he married Christine Martini (1761-1803), daughter of a local merchant. This marriage was probably one of the main reasons for his conversion to Catholicism. Soon, Heimann became one of Cologne leading spice, wine and gunpowder traders; he also excelled in shipping and commission business.
Between 1792 and 1795 he was a member of the City Council (he was especially known for his political activity in 1794, at the onset of French occupation of Cologne - see our image nr.9). In 1797, he was elected the President of Cologne Traders Union. He died in 1835. Our image nr.7 offers Heimann's extensive biography.
In this portrait, he appears to be ca 45/50 years of age. This detail allows us to suggest that this miniature was executed in the mid-1800s, still during French occupation. Another portrait of Friedrich Karl Heimann as a young man (ca 25? its whereabouts unknown) originally painted by Cologne artist K.B. Beckenkamp is known to us through a 19th century copy by Peter Hasenclever (see our image nr.10).
The legend on verso also refers to him as "pere" (father) of Josephine (Marianne Josephine) Rudler - his daughter from the first marriage (after the death of his first wife, he was remarried twice), who married Cologne official Franz Xavier Rudler.
The same legend also names him a "parrain" (godfather) of certain Charles Ritter.
Besides that, the author of this legend writes that Heimann died in Bonn (a contradiction to the documents (available on the Web) stating Cologne as his last place of residence).
This high quality miniature on ivory strongly resembles works of German miniaturist Johann Christian Kuntze, who was active in Cologne in the discussed period (CLICK HERE FOR OTHER WORKS OF THIS ARTIST IN OUR POSSESSION).
Johann Christian Kuntze (1761 Bonn - 1832 Cologne) was a son of porcelain painter Christian Gottlieb Kuntze. He studied at the Academy of Dusseldorf and was presumably active in this city for a long time (with possible interruption for a short stay in England). Kuntze settled in Cologne in 1798. Schidlof mentions only one miniature by him ("Man in green costume") dated 1791, which was sold in Vienna in 1937.
