According to the legend on verso of this pastel (the authenticity of which we have no reason to doubt), this relatively young lady dressed and hair-styled according to fashion of the early 1810s, is none other than Charlotte (Maria Carolina), Freiin (Baroness) von Roggenbach, daughter of high-ranking, South-German official Adam Xaver, Freiherr (Baron) von Roggenbach (see our image nr.11).
She was born on November 2, 1780 in Porrentruy, Jura / Switzerland and died at the age of 77 in Freiburg im Breisgau (then Duchy Baden) on January 30, 1858. According to the documents found on the Web, she was never married. In 1811, she became a Hofmeisterin (court title) at the Bavarian Court in Munich. Consequently, she became first the governess of King's daughter, Princess Elisabetha Ludovica of Bavaria (future Crown Princess of Prussia) and then - the governess of the latter's sister, Princess Amalia Augusta (future Duchess of Saxe). In 1828, Charlotte von Roggenbach was granted the Bavarian Ladies Order of St. Anna.

This high quality portrait is a typical work of Bavarian pastelist of the turn of 19th century, Johann Baptist Hirschmann (CLICK HERE).

Johann Baptist Hirschmann (1770 Burgkundstadt, Germany - 1829) was a member of a famous German artist family of the 17th - 19th century. He began as a miniaturist and pastel painter in Den Haag, was also active in Bamberg, Hamburg, Regenburg, etc., and exhibited in Munich and Augsburg. His works belong to collection of the Kupferstichkabinett Dresden, Bavarian National Museum in Munich and other German museums.
