Offered here is a watercolor by French military artist Theodore Jung, who was active in the 1st half of the 19th century. It is a panoramic depiction of the battlefield of Borodino (called in France Bataille de la Moskova - CLICK HERE). This battle took place on September 7, 1812 at the village Borodino, situated 23 km from Moscow. The fighting occurred between the French Grand Armée led by Napoleon Bonaparte and the Russian Army under command of General (after the battle, he was raised to Field Marshal) Michail Kutuzov.

Theodore (Marie François Felix Theodore) Jung (1803 Strasbourg - 1865 Strasbourg) was a son of architect Felix Jung, who was in charge of bridge- and road constructions across Alsace region. From 1820, he attended the Strasbourg School of Drawing, where he trained with Gabriel Christophe Guerin. Later, he became a pupil of Simeon Fort in Paris. From 1830, he was employed as a draughtsman at the "Service de la Carte de France". His talent was noted by General Pelet, the Director of "Depot de l'Armée" at the French Ministry of War, who offered him a job in this organization. Jung proceeded to work there successfully until the end of his life. He was also commissioned by King Louis Philippe to partake in creation of the Versailles battle gallery (he procured twelve watercolors and one oil painting for this project). In 1855, he was promoted to "dessinateur de premiere class". In 1860, Jung was awarded the Chevalier Cross of Legion of Honor.

Our images nr.5-10 show several other battle watercolors of Theodore Jung that were offered at art auctions in the last years.
