This work is probably one of a kind (we could not locate any other) portrait of well-known Bavarian-born scholar and Prussian official - then 23/25-year-old Karl Friedrich Wilhelm Glaser (for his extensive biography, see our images nr. 5-6). In this miniature portrait, he is dressed and hair-styled in the fashion of the late 1790s - a detail that entitles us to maintain that this portrait was executed in Bayreuth. According to Glaser's biography (see again our image nr.6), he moved from Bayreuth to Nuremberg in 1802.
The author of this portrait miniature - well-known South German pastelist and miniaturist Johann Lorenz Kreul - also lived in Bayreuth in the same period (1799-1807; our comparison images nr.11-12 leave no doubt of his authorship).

Johann Lorenz Kreul (1765 Erlbach - 1840 Nuremberg) began his studies under G. Ph. Zwinger at the Art School of Nuremberg. Apart from that, he took lessons from Ansbach court artist Friedrich Cotthard Naumann (see his work in our possession). He made numerous study trips through Germany, before settling for two years in Stuttgart on invitation of Duke of Wuerttemberg, and becoming the latter's royal portraitist. In 1807, he moved to Nuremberg. His son, Johann Friedrich Karl Kreul (1804-1867) was also a well-known portraitist. This explains why our artist is often referred to as Johann Lorenz Kreul the Elder.
