This superior quality bas-relief of the Empress Catherine II of Russia as the Roman goddess Minerva was produced in 1760/70s. It was based on the medal by Johann Georg Wächter (see our image nr.5). Surely made in St. Petersburg, this walrus bone carving was highly likely a work of the Kholmorory (Arkhangelskaya Gubernia) carver Osip Christophorovich Dudin, who was active in the Russian capital at that time (for Dudin's similar works, as well as his biography from the dictionary of Russian artists, see our images nr.7-9).

Osip Christophorovich Dudin was born in 1714 in village Kuroostrov, Arkhangelskaya Gubernia. After learning the trade of walrus bone carving, he came to St. Petersburg in 1757, where he then (mostly) produced portraits. From 1775, he lived in Slisselburg; later - in Solovetski Monastery (where he obviously died after 1785).
His works can be viewed in the State Hermitage Museum (St. Petersburg) and the Kremlin Armoury (Oruzheynaya Palata).
