When published in the standard anthology on portrait miniatures - "Miniaturen Dosen" - co-authored by Jrg Nimmergut and Anna-Maria Wager, one of the two miniatures presented here was erroneously (!) attributed to Swiss artist Karl Ludwig Zehender (1752-1814; see our image nr.15). In reality, these two double portraits (both of them signed "Zender /1808") of a still anonymous family are very important works of Lyon miniaturist Jean-Victor Zender.

According to Schidlof, Zender was a French miniaturist, who was mentioned in reference sources as an artist working between 1797 and 1821 (sic!). Schidlof says also that "although one rather frequently meets works by him, so far we have no information about this artist. He was a good artist of average talent, who worked rather freely and whose works are reminiscent of those of E.Lami".
Mme Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard through in-depth research came to the artist's real identity:
Jean Victor Zender was born on 8th April 1767 in St. Nizier de Lyon (suburb of Lyon, France) as son of Pierre Zendre (sic!) "matre eberiste" (cabinet maker) and his wife Marie, ne Thomas.
In 1810 he lived in Place du Conceil, n 48-49, Lyon; in 1827 his address is rue Claudia, n 4 and in 1835 - rue de la Grenette, n28. He died in Lyon on June 25th 1842.
