On view here is a highly qualitative miniature portrait of a young aristocratic lady posing against a distant view of Florence (a Grand Tour voyager?). It was executed (according to sitter's dress and hairstyle) in the mid-1780s.
According to our friend, world-best specialist in portrait miniatures Dr. Bodo Hofstetter (his email of January 18, 2019), the author of this miniature was "Monogrammist D.M.", whose several works are already in our possession.
According to Nathalie Lemoine-Bouchard, the artist probably lived in Bordeaux and Paris. His clients were mainly residents of Bordeaux and military officers. He exhibited a miniature with a copy after Vigee-Lebrun's portrait of Duchesse d'Orleans at the Salon de Paris in 1789. He usually signed with "D.M." or "DM".
Works of his can be seen a.o. in Musée Lambinet and Versailles.
On the other hand, based on the high quality of his works the artist was not an amateur but surely one who gained academical training. The only french portrait miniaturist from the 1780/90s possessing a monogram DM (according to all possible artist dictionaries) is Silvestre-David Mirys (or Mieris). The latter was born into a Polish family in 1742 and died in Paris in 1810. From 1771 he studied at the Ecole Académie of Paris listed as "protége par M(onsieur) Vien" and "protége par Sa Majesté le roi de Pologne". He became known as portrait miniature painter (sic!) and engraver. His wife "Mme Mirys" was also a well-listed miniaturist in the mid 1790s, exponent of Salon de Paris (concerning both artists see our last additional image with clips from N. Lemoine-Bouchard).
