August Alexius Canzi (actually Martin Kanz) was born in 1808 in Baden near Vienna in Austria. He studied at first in Stuttgart, Germany and from 1834 under the famous Ingres in Paris. He then lived in Stuttgart (1838-40), in Vienna (1840), again in Paris and from 1846 until his death in 1866 in Budapest, Hungary. He was mainly active as portrait painter of German, Austrian and French aristocracy.
