Adolf Grotefend was born in 1812 in Claustal in Harz and died in 1847 in Florence. He initially studied law in Goettingen. In 1836, he moved to Munich, where he then studied miniature painting. Grotefend remained in Munich until 1846; then, due to lung condition, resettled in Italy, where he passed away one year later.
