This high quality miniature portrait of an anonymous young woman (she is dressed and hairstyled according to fashion of the early 1820s) is a work of well-known Swiss miniaturist Hans Joachim Brunschweiler.

Hans Joachim Brunschweiler (1770 Erlen in Thurgau, Switzerland - 1853 ibidem) was a self-taught miniaturist. He began his career by accompanying a traveling theater group as a decoration painter, and in 1793 was mentioned in Zurich as a copyist and "Flachmaler". Soon he turned to portrait genre and in the years to follow was active in Winterthur, Lucerne, Bern and Schaffhausen.
Obviously, sometime in this period, he "crossed" the border and began working in South Germany. In any case, we know that in 1816 Brunschweiler produced portraits of the Princess of Fuerstenberg that were later followed by those of the Prince of Hohenlohe, the King of Wuerttemberg and the Grand Duchess of Baden. In about 1820 he worked in St. Gallen; in about 1830 - in Fraeunfeld and later returned to his native Erlen.
Works of this artist can be viewed in museums of Bregenz, Donaueschingen, Nancy, as well as in various esteemed privated collections (CLICK HERE FOR OTHER WORKS OF THIS ARTIST IN OUR POSSESSION).
