This work was found per chance on Ebay. Is an extremely rare and very important miniature self-portrait of well-known Strasbourg, late-18th-century artist and elder brother of renowned French miniaturist Jean-Urbain Guerin - Christophe Guerin.
A comparison with his only known other portrait (see our image nr.7) leaves no doubt about his identity!
Christophe Guerin (1758 Strasbourg - 1831 Strasbourg) was a member of the Strasbourg artist family: his father (and his first teacher) Jean Guerin (1724-1787) was an engraver; his younger brother Jean-Urbain (1760-1836) - a portrait miniaturist, and his son Gabriel-Christophe (1790-1846) - a painter.
After the initial studies with his father, Christophe Guerin enrolled into Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, where he trained with Nicolas-René Jollain and Étienne Jeaurat. After graduating from this school, he returned in 1787 (this year also marked the death year of his father thus making him the head of the family) to Strasbourg and continued his father's trade by engraving banknotes for the local mint and illustrating books. Occasionally, he also produced engraved portraits. The latter activity had clearly moved him to paint miniature portrait on ivory (especially in the 1790s). He also became a professor at the Strasbourg "École centrale du département du Bas-Rhin" and the head of "École gratuite de dessin" - the posts he occupied up until his death in 1831.
In 1802, he also became the curator of "Musée des Beaux-Arts" of Strasbourg.
