Illegibly monogrammed and dated (at 4:00 o'clock - see image nr.2) it is a work of 1st class German miniaturist of late 18th century, working in manner of Berlin pastelist Johann Heinrich Schroeder (see latter's works in our possession).
The depicted gentleman was a senior officer (note the thick fringes on his epaulettes) or perhaps even a general; based on his uniform, he must have served in British Army (one finds this type of epaulettes in British military portraits of the late 18th century; see our images nr.7-8)). Moreover, the sitter's uniform resembles the one worn by senior officers of the British Royal Fusiliers Regiment (for comparison, see our image nr.9).
