French oil on canvas painting with portrait of a middle-aged gentleman wearing a gala uniform of a lieutenant of Luxembourg (4th) Company of Regiment "Gardes-du-Corps du Roi" (period of Restoration; see our images nr.9-10). His epaulettes are of an army colonel. He bears only one award - Chevalier Cross of the French Royal Order of Saint-Louis.
Through brief search in 1816 issue of standart refference source - "Almanach Royal" - we found only one lieutenant of "Compagnie Luxembourgh", who had an army rank of a colonel and who was in possession of only Chevalier Cross of Saint Louis. His name was Juste-Charles de Fay, comte de la Tour-Maubourg. in 1816 he was 42-year-olld (full accordance with sitter's visual age!).
Our images nr. 11-14 provide following information about this French aristocrat:
He was born on 8 June 1774 in La-Motte-de Galaure, department Drone and died in 1846, in Paris. He was the younger brother of two associates of famous Marquis de Lafayette (CLICK HERE) - Charles CÚsar (CLICK HERE) and Victor (CLICK HERE). Together with his brothers and Lafayette he was captured in Rochefort, Belgium and imprisoned by Austrians, but was soon released. He lived in exile until the release of his brothers. After Lafayette was also released from Olmutz, Juste-Charles married latter's daughter Anastasie de Lafayette (1777-1863; she was imprisoned with father) at Madame de Tesse's Witmold, on 9 May 1798. He rebuilt the family castle, le Chateau des Mayeux, destroyed during the Revolution by a fire and owned it until his death. In 1830 he became mayor of La Chapelle-Rablais by Paris.
One of his descendants is Queen Paola of Belgium.
