Georg Decker "Boy from the Habsburg Family (Archduke Leopold Ferdinand?)", superb pastel!!, 1870s
Georg Decker was born in 1819 in Budapest and began studying with his father Johann Stephan Decker, who gave him lessons in drawing, watercolour and portrait miniature painting. From 1844 he turned to oil painting which he studied at the Vienna Academy, and from 1850s was engaged in pastel painting, which he had studied in Dresden from the works by R.Mengs and J.E.Liotard. He introduced this technique, a long time neglected, in Vienna again, and developed an outstanding activity as pastel artist during the following years. For long he worked almost exceptionally for the Viennese Court.
According to a legend existing for generations in the family of the previous owner, the sitter of this painting is a prince from the House of Habsburg.
