Josef Bekel (1806 Langenau, Czech Republic - 1865 ibidem) was one of the best Czech portrait miniaturists of the 19th century. He was a pupil of the Prague Academy, then studied under Peter Krafft and Anton Peter at the Vienna Academy. In Vienna he won great popularity as portrait painter and received numerous commissions. Bekel was a friend and collaborator of the famous Viennese portraitist and lithographer Josef Kriehuber. After 1840 he lived in Prague, where he became one of the most sought-after artists of his time.
