An extreme rarity (virtually undiscoverable at the current antique market), is a work of well-known Franco-Russian artist of the turn of the 19th century - Gilles-Paul Barbier. This charming pastel portrait of a (still anonymous) girl was executed in St. Petersburg (based on artist's signature with the date of "1803"), where the artist settled in 1796 and where he remained until his death in 1828 (for his biography, see below).
Gilles-Paul Barbier (until recently known in Russian art reference sources as "Paul Barbier" / biographical data unavailable) was born in 1768 in Paris and died in 1828 in St. Petersburg. In 1782, he graduated from the Parisian Academie Royale and then moved to London. There, between the years 1792-1793, he exhibited portraits (also miniatures!) at the Royal Academy. In 1796, as already mentioned, Barbier moved to Russia, where several years later he married a housekeeper employed by the Imperial Laundries (she was active between 1805 and 1836) by the name Ekaterina (married name "Ekaterina Barbier"). Besides his endeavor as portrait and genre artist, Barbier taught drawing at the St. Petersburg Court.
