Miss Eliza Sharpe (1796-1874) "The Maid from Athens", well-known watercolor!!, 1830/35
Aristocratic (see her richly ermined dress) girl of Greek descent (see her cap); she is coquettishly peeking from behind a window curtain. Behind it is a distant view of her castle - it is a typical example of early Victorian painting.
Miss Eliza Sharpe was born in 1796 in Birmingham. She was one of four daughters of William Sharpe, a Birmingham engraver, who brought them to London ca. 1816. She exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1817-1867 and was a member of the "Old Water-Colour Society", where she also exhibited between 1829-1872.
