The middle-aged gentleman (his dress and hairstyle correspond to fashion of early 1790s) depicted in this round miniature as seating at his writing desk and holding a freshly written letter addressed on the envelope: "...heredett. /d'Orange /R... /an qat..." is nobody else but Willem V, Prince of Orange (1748-1806), ruling Prince of Nassau-Orange and the last Stadtholder of the Dutch Republic (see our images nr.8-10 for other portraits and extensive biography of his).

As a possible author of this piece the first in question would be the court miniarturist of Willem V, French-born artist Pierre (Pieter) Le Sage (see latter's works in our possession).

Schidlof says the following about Le Sage or Lesage: "... he was probably French miniaturist who worked for a long time in Amsterdam, then in the Hague where he became in 1763 a member of the Brotherhood of St.Luc. He was still working there in 1776."
Karen Schaffers-Bodenhausen and Marieke Tiethoff-Spliethoff write in their catalogue of Orange-Nassau collection: "... William IV (father of our Wilhelm V. -B.W.) had at least commissioned renowned and talented artists, whereas for thirty(sic!) whole years Wilhelm V employed almost exclusively the very mediocre French painter, Pierre Le Sage, whose work abounds in the royal collection...".
Hence, we now have the final biographical information about Le Sage: he worked from ca.1763 to at least 1793 in the Netherlands! More information about him can be found in M.E. Tiethoff-Spliethoff "De miniatuurschilder Pierre Le Sage en het hof van Prins, Willem V", Bulletin van het Rijksmuseum 36 (1988), 216-224.
