Matthias Klotz-Attrib. "Prince-Elector Maximilian IV of Bavaria", large pastel, 1800/06
This good quality, large pastel portrait of Maximilian IV of Bavaria (1756-1825; CLICK HERE) is probably the author's own replica of the same oil-on-canvas portrait executed by Munich artist of the turn of the 19th-century, Matthias Klotz (see our image nr.9) - now in Munich Neue Pinakothek).
Matthias Klotz (1748 Strasbourg - 1821 Munich) began his career as a pupil of Henri Haldenwanger in his native Strasbourg. In 1766, he went to Stuttgart and began training with Guibal and Bartolomeo Sootti. In 1773, he married in Heilbronn and then moved to Munich, where both of his sons - Caspar and Simon Petrus - were born. In 1775, he was appointed a landscape artist at a Court Theater in Mannheim. When Karl Theodor of Pfalz in 1778 moved his court to Munich, Klotz was reassigned to do the same job in that city. In 1794, he was appointed a court miniaturist in Munich.
