Depicted in his studio with letter in hand, this gentleman is dressed and hairstyled according to fashion of the late 1770s (for comparison, see our image nr.13).
Our comparison images nr.7-12 demonstrate that we are likely dealing with a work of well-known German-French portraitist (also a minaiturist!) Johann Julius Heinsius.

Johann Julius (also Jean Jules) Heinsius was born on 7 February 1740 in Ilmenau, Germany. He was a son of a gunsmith and court artist in Hildeburghausen Johann Christian Heintze, and younger brother to the painter (not miniaturist!) Johann Ernst Heinsius (1731-1794). In 1750 or 1752 he travelled to the Netherlands together with his father, and in 1776 he is mentioned as a member of the Painters Guild in Den Haag. The next few years he spent in Utrecht, from 1771 to 1774 he lived in Lille, Douai and Rouen. In 1777 he is already in Paris where he is mentioned as living in Rue Croix des Petit-Champs "peintre de portr." From 1779 to 1782 he regularly participated in the exhibitions of Salon de la Correspondence. He soon became a very popular portraitist of the Paris society, especially with its female representatives. In 1779 he is mentioned in Versailles as "Premier peintre des Medames de France" (daughters of Louis XV). At the beginning of the French Revolution he went to Gien in Loire and then, in 1790 settled in Orléans from where he made commission trips to Evreux, Troyes and Paris.
Apart from a few genre scenes he made exclusively portraits in oil and miniatures on ivory. He died in Orléans on 19 May 1812.
