Set in a very well maintained original leather travelling etui, this premium quality miniature is an original work of the well known Austrian miniaturist Carl von Saar.

The sitter of this portrait was a member of aristocratic family living in Lower Austria - Ferdinand Malcolm Graf (Count) von Gatterburg (see our images nr.8-9). He was born on 19th March 1803 as son of Graf Joseph von Gatterburg and latter's wife Elise, nee Freiin (Baroness) Ott von Batorkesz. In 1828, after the death of his father, he became owner of Castle Gatterburg in Retz (see our image nr 10; Retz is an Austrian town at Austrio-Czech border, 14 km from Znaim (Czech Republic)). In the same year he married Marie Gräfin (Countess) Podstatzky-Liechtenstein (1803-1864) and had with latter ten children (all survived). He possessed also estate Zwölffaring and estate Pellendorf (both by Vienna). He died on 12th December 1882, in Sazburg.

Carl von Saar (1797 Vienna- 1853 ibid.) was a very well-known Austrian portrait miniaturist. He studied at the Vienna Academy under Janscha and Maurer and exhibited in the academical exhibitions from 1822. First strongly influenced by miniatures of Daffinger, he later more followed the direction of Kriehuber, especially in his watercolor portraits. He belonged to the most favorite portraitists of the Austrian aristocracy.
