We are dealing with executed in 1838 large miniature on ivory with a portrait of a senior (according to form of his cuirasse) officer of Austrian Cuirassier Regiment No.8 (see our image nr.10). His helmet with Emperor's cypher "F.1." (for Kaiser Ferdinand I of Austria) corresponds to regulation of late 1830s. He bears (obtained many years ago) Austrian bronze Army ("Canon") Cross which were awarded all Austrian combatants of Liberation (anti-Napoleonic) War of 1813/1814 (see our image nr.11).
In 1838 8th Cuirassier Regiment obtained a new commander - just promoted to colonel and transferred from 3rd Dragoon Regiment, certain Johann Swoboda. The latter, 24 years ago, participated in Liberation War (we meet him (as an Obelieutenant (1st lieutenant)) in 1814, in the officer list of the same 3rd Dragoons) and was therefore (since late 1815) a bearer of Canon Cross. Nevertheless in 1838 he still possessed no other awards (sic!). We believe he ordered this miniature just after he clothed himself in his new uniform of 8th Cuirassiers.
Unfortunately we could not find any biographical information about him. In September of 1839 he was pensioned off; in 1840 regiment had already another commander.
Johann Swoboda retirement was probably result of a serious illness - we find him in next two years as resident of Brünn (now Brno, Czech Republic) where he obviously died soon afterwards (in 1843 list of retired colonels his name is not already,mentioned...).
This high quality miniature is an important work of very well-known Czech miniaturist Frantisek (Franz) Maschek (Mašek). In 1838 the latter lived in Prague, and the 8th Cuirassiers were stationed in Bohemian town Podiebrad (now Podebrady, Czech Republic) which is situated 55 km from Prague..
Frantisek Maschek (1790 Kuttenberg/Kutna Hora /Czech Republic - 1862 Leitmeritz / Litomeric / Czech Republic) was a pupil of the Academy of Prague, worked as a portrait miniaturist in Prague and (as Schidlof presumes) in Vienna. In 1846 he visited Paris where he got to know J.B. Isabey. His works can be found in the main Czech and Austrian public and private collections.
Our images nr.12 shows a similar miniature by this artist.
Provenance: private collection, Prague
Several years long, due to wrong "attribution" by Moscow uniformologist Dimitri Gorchkoff (due to his countless mistakes we don't collaborate wih him more!) this miniature was thought to be a dated 1828 (instead correct 1838!) portrait of certain Lieutenant (sic! - junior officer (although sitter's cuirasse is that of a senior officer!)) Carl Karner who served in 1820s in the same 8th Cuirassier Regiment. In contrary, in 1838 there was no Carl Karner in that regiment.
