Miklos (Nikolaus) Barabas was born in Markusfalva (now Marcusa in Romania) in 1810. He grew up in impoverished circumstances and first received instruction in painting from Szabo and F. Gentilnuomo in Siebenburgen. In 1827-1830 he studied lithography in Hermannstadt under Gabor Barra and in 1829 began to study at the Vienna Academy under Karl Gsellhofer, but broke off the studies during the same year. In 1831-33 ( our painting being dated 1831 !) he lived in Bukarest and from 1835 in Pest. In 1834-35 he was in Italy working at the studio of Karoly Marko. Barabas made his first portraits already in 1823 as a 13-year-old boy. In the 1830s it was heaping comissions on him and he portrayed a lot of famous people (e.g. the composer Franz Liszt). The artist was also active as genre and lanscape painter, but portrait stayed his main subject. Works by Barabas can be seen in the greatest museums of Hungary and in other countries (e.g. the Uffizi Gallery in Florence).
