Carl J. A. Agricola "Countess Caroline Hadik, nee Fuenfkirchen", outstanding miniature!!, 1810/15

Price: ON REQUEST

(please note additional 13% tax applies for transactions concluded within the European Union)

This outstanding quality, large miniature which was executed by leading Austrian portraitist Carl Josef Alois Agricola in early 1810s (according to lady's dress and hairstyle) is the earliest known portrait of shortly before married Countess Caroline Hadik von Futak, nee Countess Fuenfkirchen (Fünfkirchen). Only known till today lithographic portrait (see our image nr.9) shows her 15/20 years later; without any doubt we see the same woman.

Countess Caroline was born on 15 May 1795 as daughter (5th child) of Austrian Rittmeister (cavalry captain) and chamberlain, Count Johann Franz Fünfkirchen of Chlumetz branch (d. 1807). In 1810, being only 15 (on our portrait she seems to be 17/19-year-old) she married also (like her father) captain of Austrian 10th Hussar Regiment (just after the wedding he resigned military service) and son of famous Austrian cavalry general - Count Andreas Friedrich Hadik von Futak (1789-1839; see our image nr.10). Their marriage was childlos. Caroline outlived her husband for 25 years and died on 21 November 1864 at her estate Lösch by Bruenn (then Austrian Moravia, now Brno, Czech Republik).
Still in 1814 she was awarded Austrian Ladies Order of Star Cross and title of "Palastdame" (lady-in waiting).

Carl Josef Alois Agricola (1779 Saeckingen/Baden - 1852 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian historical, portrait and miniaturist painter. He was born in Germany, began studying in Karlsruhe, moved to Vienna in 1798 and studied at the Viennese Academy under the famous Fueger. Agricola became a very popular portrait miniature artist and also made many historical and allegorical paintings. Especially known are his paintings with little children, a few of them can be seen at the Austrian National Gallery "Belvedere".
