Wer are dealing with obviously executed in 1827, just after her wedding with Austrian Chancellor Prince Klemens von Metternich (CLICK HERE; she became his second wife) miniature portrait of Freiin (Baroness) Antonie (Maria Antonie) von Leykam (see our images nr.11-12). She was born on 25 August 1806, in Naples, Italy as daughter of an Austrian diplomat, musician and composer Christoph Ambros Freiherr (Baron) von Leykam (1777-1830) and his bourgeois wife, Neapolitan opera singer Antonia Caputo de Marchesi della Petrella. She died on 17 January 1829 (fifteen months after the wedding), after the birth of her son Richard Klemens Prince von Metternich-Winneburg (1829-1865; CLICK HERE). Shortly after her death her husband married his third wife, Countess Melania Maria Antonia Zichy-Ferraris de Zich et Vásonykeö (in total prince had sixteen (two illegitimate) children).

This miniature is an outstanding work of one of the few best Vienna portrait artists - Carl Josef Alois Agricola.

Carl Josef Alois Agricola (1779 Saeckingen/Baden - 1852 Vienna) was a very well-known Austrian historical, portrait and miniaturist painter. He was born in Germany, began studying in Karlsruhe, moved to Vienna in 1798 and studied at the Viennese Academy under the famous Fueger. Agricola became a very popular portrait miniature artist and also made many historical and allegorical paintings. Especially known are his paintings with little children, a few of them can be seen at the Austrian National Gallery "Belvedere".

Our image nr.13 shows a very similiar miniature by Agricola.
